Why convert STEP to 3MF instead of STL?

Is the original STEP geometry preserved exactly?
No. STEP contains precise CAD surfaces, while 3MF stores polygonal mesh geometry. The surfaces must therefore be tessellated into triangles during conversion.
Can separate STEP parts remain separate in the 3MF file?
When the source file exposes separate parts or bodies, the converter can preserve them as separate 3MF objects where technically possible.
Does 3MF preserve the model unit?
